Graduation
Susan Thomas’s journey at Purdy Schools began as a Reading Coach from 2007 to 2009. A few years later, in 2012, she returned as a paraprofessional and has since become a steady, supportive presence for students and staff alike. While she can’t pinpoint one specific favorite memory, what stands out most to Susan is the strong sense of community at Purdy. Being part of a smaller school has made it feel more like a family than just a workplace—something she has deeply valued over the years. As she steps away, she knows she’ll dearly miss the people—both students and colleagues—who have made her days brighter. She’s grateful for the friendships she’s formed and the connections that have made her time at Purdy so meaningful. One thing she won’t miss, however, is the lightning-fast lunch breaks! After years of gulping down meals in record time, she’s looking forward to rediscovering the joy of slow, relaxed lunches. Looking back, Susan hopes that the students she worked with remember her as someone who treated them with kindness, respect, and compassion, while also challenging them to push themselves and strive for success. To her younger self, she’d offer a bit of practical—and heartfelt—advice: Your parents really did know what they were talking about. And finish college! As for retirement, Susan doesn’t have a set plan just yet, but she’s excited for what’s ahead. She hopes to take more trips to Texas to visit her daughter and son-in-law, catch up on her reading, and finally tackle a few long-awaited home projects. #EagleExcellence

Rebecca Greenway began her journey at Purdy Schools in January of 2000, and over the years, she became a constant source of support, care, and encouragement to students and staff alike. One of her favorite traditions has been helping with hair for the school musicals—something she’s proudly done since around 2016 or 2017. Those backstage moments, full of laughter, nerves, and creativity, hold a special place in her heart. For Rebecca, the best part of being an Eagle has always been the relationships she’s built with the students. Forming those bonds and watching young people grow, overcome challenges, and find their confidence has been the most rewarding part of her time at Purdy. As she retires, she knows she’ll miss her wonderful coworkers and the joy of seeing her students make progress. However, she’s more than ready to say goodbye to all the projects—and she’s not shy about it! 🤣 Rebecca hopes her students remember that she truly cared about each and every one of them. She wants them to know they are capable of anything they set their minds to and that someone believed in them, always. If she could go back and share one piece of advice with her younger self, it would be this: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy the moments more—because the years go by fast. Looking ahead, Rebecca’s retirement plans include spending lots of time with her grandbabies and possibly subbing now and then so she can still see the kids she loves so much. Her time in the classroom may be ending, but her impact will be felt for years to come. #EagleExcellence

Kimberly Utter began her journey at Purdy Schools in the 1998–1999 school year. Over the decades, she poured her heart into every role she took on, but it was in the Art room where she felt most alive. Teaching Art ignited something in her soul—the creativity, the freedom of expression, the spark in her students’ eyes. Those moments are the ones she treasures most. At the core of Kimberly’s time at Purdy were the students. Their energy, resilience, and boundless potential gave each day meaning and purpose. They were the heartbeat of her career, and the reason she returned year after year. But the students weren’t the only ones who shaped her experience—her colleagues left a deep and lasting imprint as well. The conversations, the support, the shared laughter and tears—they were part of what made Purdy home. Leaving isn’t easy. The hardest days were never about the job itself, but the emotional toll of caring deeply. There were drives home that ended in tears, thinking about children facing challenges far too heavy for their young shoulders. That kind of care doesn't clock out at the end of the day—it lingers, because that's who Kimberly is. Looking back, she hopes her greatest legacy isn’t found on a wall or in a file, but in the lives of her students. Many still reach out, long after graduation—seeking advice, sharing news, or simply stopping her in town for a hug. For Kimberly, that’s the truest measure of impact: to be remembered as someone who saw them, believed in them, and encouraged them to keep going. She believes the real legacy in education is human. It's about kindness, empathy, and being the safe place someone needed at just the right time. And if we do it well, students return—not just with memories, but with their own children in tow, ready to pass along that same trust. If she could offer advice to her younger self, she’d say this: People will be mean. Don’t take it personally. Their behavior is a reflection of them, not you. As she steps into retirement, Kimberly is ready for new adventures—traveling to places she's never been, treasure-hunting in thrift stores, and soaking up the Florida sunshine in the winter months. She looks forward to more time with her family and living each day with intention and joy. And though she will miss many parts of Purdy, she will miss Susan most of all—her best friend and voice of reason through it all. Their friendship, built over years of shared experiences, laughter, and truth-telling, is something she will carry with her always. #EagleExcelllence
